Inspiration is a word that is used In fashion a lot. Inspiration can be based on nature, a film, a piece of music, dance, other designers, or the experience of how a particular fabric feels against your hand. Some designers interpret their inspiration literally. A fascination with the wild nature can be translated into a flower pattern on a dress. Other sounds inspired influence in a more abstract way to frame a sought-after feeling or mood embodied in clothing.
Moodboards is an important visual tools that designers uses working with a new collection. Collage of newspaper clippings, photographs, designs, colors and material samples will help to illustrate the feeling that a collection should convey. Usually moodboard is based on a theme which then becomes the base inspiration for creation.
The requirement to convey his inspiration can feel suffocating for designers. Something that can be linked with the notion of the creative genius who receive divine inspiration from the art. When the American designer Marc Jacobs in 2008 was asked what his inspiration, he replied: "I really was not very inspired this season. I just live my life". One telling comment that puts the finger on the creative process does not always allow themselves summed in a theme or backstory.
Designers are often secretive about what they are inspired by the work on a new collection. But as an outsider, it is exciting to get insight into the ideas and thoughts behind the collections. Before fashion week, Hope, Minimarket, Uniforms for the Dedicated and The Local Firm revieled their inspirations.
The exhibition, which is a collaboration between PUB and the store Aplace, is part of an ambition to advise and support the Swedish fashion and design.
PREVIEW - 26 January - 3 February.
